Scope of the Position
Responsible for cabling and termination of Cat3, Cat5, Cat6, Fiber and various other wiring disciplines. The position includes the testing and troubleshooting of wiring problems.
Responsibilities
• Responsible for running new cabling in new or existing buildings.
• Termination and testing of new cabling.
• Responsible for testing and troubleshooting of cable.
• Evaluate documented resolutions and suggest ways to prevent future problems.
• Field incoming help requests from end users via telephone, email and text in a courteous manner.
• Document all pertinent end user problem or issue.
• Escalate problems (when required) to the appropriate experienced technician.
• Record, track, and document - help desk request, problem-solving process, including all successful and unsuccessful decisions made, and brief IT Support Supervisor on final resolution.
• Use only approved diagnostic utilities to aid in troubleshooting.
• Must be knowledgeable in various wiring configurations and terminations including Ethernet, Fiber and telecommunications networks.
• Physically install Category 3, Category 5, Enhanced Category 5, and Category 6 Structured Cable Distribution Systems.
• Installation of outlets, pulling cable, fire stopping and pre-termination including organizing, forming, dressing and labeling cables to industry standards.
• Accurately test copper and fiber (multimode and single mode) cables to required certification parameters utilizing appropriate test equipment as required.
• Diagnose and correct copper and optical fiber problems.
• Removal and demolition of abandoned cables.
• Maintain and reference industry standards including ANSI, EIA/TIA, NEC, NFPA and local and Low Voltage Code.
• Determine closet and equipment layouts and install closet hardware including backboards, connecting blocks, racks, patch panels and fiber enclosures, and balance video equipment.
• Install entrance facility grounding infrastructure and perform grounding tests.
• Perform cable splices.
• Perform work in retrofit and new construction environments and implement cut-overs.
• Attend training and safety meetings. Work safely at all times utilizing the necessary Personal Protection Equipment. Demonstrate safe working practices.
• Must have knowledge of basic computer skills and be able to demonstrate good writing skills.
• Must work well with little supervision individually and in a team environment.
• Perform administrative tasks including, but not limited to, documenting test results and as-builds, providing labor summary reports, etc.
• Order and inventory materials. Develop project plan including required materials, deliver schedules, completion schedules.
• Physically install Category 3, Category 5, Enhanced Category 5, and Category 6 Structured Cable Distribution Systems.
• Test circuits and components of malfunctioning telecommunications equipment to isolate sources of malfunctions, using test meters, circuit diagrams, polarity probes, and other hand tools.
• Test repaired, newly installed, or updated equipment to ensure that it functions properly and conforms to specifications, using test equipment and observation.
• Climb poles and ladders, use truck-mounted booms, and enter areas such as manholes and cable vaults to install, maintain, or inspect equipment.
• Assemble and install communication equipment such as data and telephone communication lines, wiring, switching equipment, wiring frames, power apparatus, and networks.
• Physically install security camera cables
• Demonstrate basic knowledge of LAN/WAN topologies, cabling standards and components
• Network, VOIP, Wireless, and Video Experience considered a Major Plus
• Ability to work extended hours (overtime) as needed.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
• Must be available to travel when needed and available 24/7. (Access to company vehicle or rental will be provided, as necessary, for work related travel.)
• The incumbent is responsible for the awareness, understanding, specific responsibilities and management of the Environmental Management System (EMS) as stated in EMS policy CEVPL.00005.
Qualifications
• High School diploma or equivalent
• 1 to 2-year work experience in related field required.
• Certification in copper, coax testing, and termination is a plus.
• Certification in forklift, scissor lift, safety training is a plus.
• Certification in Fiber Splicing is a plus.
• Knowledge of basic computer hardware and application software is a plus.
• Experience with desktop operating systems is a plus.
• Working knowledge of a range of diagnostic utilities.
• Exceptional customer service orientation and the ability to present ideas in user-friendly language.

• Keen attention to detail and able to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
• Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
